Solid hardwoods can last a very long time with the right care. With many brands opting for cheaper options such as MDF\/HDF( fiber board that’s cheap) you end up with products that don’t look very good and can off-gas (emit) chemicals like formaldehyde. For certain applications these materials are fine, but as a bench accessory and one that’s near your face each day, it should not be emitting toxic chemicals.
